About this Performance
Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero both play the acoustic guitar, but the music they make is not the stuff of coffee shops and quiet, contemplative evenings. The duo previously played together in a thrash band, and when they set off on their own in the mid-2000s, they applied the shredding principles of metal to the wood and steel of acoustic instruments—Rodrigo as a lightning-fast lead player, Gabriela with a thumping, percussive style that sets their unlikely rhythms. Along the way, they’ve won Grammys, played for President Obama and Mexican president Felipe Calderón, and—perhaps most importantly—adapted their extraordinary skill set to a wide variety of sounds. Their most recent album, the ambitious METTAVOLUTION, is a meditation on Buddhism and human possibility, while on their newly released EP JAZZ they tackle music by Snarky Puppy and Kamasi Washington. They bring all this power, energy, and precision to bear on a scorching night at The Ford.
