Twenty-six year old conductor RYAN McADAMS is quickly establishing himself as one of the major talents of his generation. Currently the 15th Music Director of the New York Youth Symphony, McAdams follows in a distinguished line of conductors including Leonard Slatkin, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Mischa Santora, and Myung-Whun Chung. A Fulbright scholar, he previously served as Apprentice Conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic under the tutelage of Chief Conductor and Music Director-Designate of the New York Philharmonic, Alan Gilbert. This past spring, he was invited by Lorin Maazel to create the post of Apprentice Conductor for the Chateauville Foundation at the Maazel Estate in Virginia, assisting Maestro Maazel on a production of Britten's The Rape of Lucretia with singers from the MET Lindemann program and members of the Youth Orchestra of the Americas. In the 2008-09 season, McAdams appears with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Princeton Symphony, Aspen Music Festival, Wordless Music Series, and at Carnegie Hall with the New York Youth Symphony. The 2007-08 season included appearances with the New Jersey Symphony, Glimmerglass Opera, Rutgers University, and the Juilliard FOCUS! Festival. He also served as cover conductor to David Robertson and the Saint Louis Symphony at Carnegie Hall in performances of Messiaen's Turangalila Symphony and the U.S. Premiere of John Adams' Doctor Atomic Symphony, and served as assistant conductor to Anne Manson at the Juilliard Opera Center for the New York premiere of Ned Rorem's Our Town. This was in addition to his three Carnegie Hall appearances with the NYYS. In 2005 and 2006, he attended the Aspen Music Festival as an Academy Conductor, studying with David Zinman and Murry Sidlin, and participating in masterclasses with Marin Alsop, George Manahan, Leonard Slatkin, Asher Fisch, and James Conlon. In 2006, David Zinman selected him to serve as his assistant on the Aspen premiere of Rorem's Our Town, and was awarded the first-ever Glimmerglass-Aspen Prize for Opera Conducting. In 2008, he returns to serve as the Assistant Conductor of the Aspen Festival. A recent graduate of the Juilliard conducting program, Ryan McAdams has worked with all of the Juilliard orchestral ensembles, and served as a graduate-level Aural Skills instructor.
