Grammy award-winning jazz vocalist and pianist Diana Krall, accompanied by the big-band sounds of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, performs selections from her entire repertoire, including her latest CD, From This Moment On, at the Hollywood Bowl, Friday and Saturday, August 17 and 18, at 8:30 p.m. The Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by Philharmonic Assistant Conductor Joana Carneiro, opens the evening with jazz standards by Bernstein, Ellington and Gershwin. The second half of the evening features Krall with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Both Krall and the jazz band are familiar to Bowl audiences - she has performed at the legendary venue numerous times and the band served as the resident jazz orchestra from 1998 to 2001.

Krall and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra are equally familiar with each other. The band is featured prominently on the Grammy-winner's 2005 Christmas Songs and also provided backing tunes for the highly-acclaimed, Grammy-nominated From This Moment On. The CD, an upbeat and personal collection that pays tribute to the artist's musical heroes and mentors, was released last year.

The Very Best of Diana Krall, the first career retrospective of the platinum selling star's music is set for release September 18 on Verve Records.

Per DIANA KRALL, her latest release, From This Moment On, coincides with a very happy time in her life and the music reflects the joy she feels in her marriage and family and for the future. The 11-song collection captures the Canadian-born sensation in full swing, in great company, and at the top of her game. Krall admits that the album's marked, upbeat theme was not originally her intention when she, her quartet and the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra assembled for two weeks of recording in Los Angeles's famed Capitol Studios last spring. In songs, mood and delivery, From This Moment On reveals Krall's personal ardor for that golden era of song-making, when Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Nat "King" Cole were in their prime. The 41-year old sensation whose cool, heavy-lidded vocals and strikingly sensitive piano-playing has helped her transcend barriers of genre to become a popular artist of the first order, has carved herself a permanent position at the top of the jazz charts. The seeds of Krall's crossover success are firmly rooted in her upbringing. Born in Nanaimo, Canada, to a musical family - her father is a stride-style pianist and serious record collector - she grew up absorbing music that laid the foundation for her future growth. She attended Berklee College of Music in the early '80s, then moved to Los Angeles where she continued her studies with the likes of bassist Ray Brown and pianist Jimmy Rowles. By 1990, Krall relocated to New York City where she began performing on a regular basis with her trio. In 1993, she released her debut album on a small Canadian independent label. Now, she can look back over a stellar career path: a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal in 1999 for When I Look in Your Eyes - the first jazz disc to be nominated for Album of the Year in 25 years; a No. 1 best-seller in the U.S. and seven-time platinum album in Canada for The Look of Love in 2002; and 2004's The Girl in the Other Room, which was her first to focus on her own songwriting and featured six tunes co-written with her husband Elvis Costello.

The CLAYTON-HAMILTON JAZZ ORCHESTRA (CHJO) is an awesome machine that has flourished over the course of 21 years under inspired and dedicated leadership. In December of 2003, it was named the best big band in America by the readers of Downbeat magazine, and in 2004, Jazz Times magazine rated the band No. 2. In 2005, CHJO commemorated its 20th anniversary with the release of CD, Live at Manchester Craftsmen's Guild. The CD topped the radio charts for a full seven weeks and John Clayton was nominated for a Grammy for arranging for the CD. Also that year the orchestra had the privilege of recording with Diana Krall and is featured prominently in her Christmas CD. Last year, the band recorded with legendary Gladys Knight and re-joined Krall to back her Grammy-nominated CD, From This Moment On. From 1998 to 2001, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra served as the resident jazz orchestra for the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, with John Clayton serving as Artistic Director of Jazz. CHJO, co-led by bassist John Clayton, his brother, reed player, Jeff Clayton, and drummer Jeff Hamilton, received critical and commercial praise generated by their rousing live concert and festival performances and award winning recordings. CHJO's Grammy-nominated recording, Groove Shop, was named by CD Review as one of the best recordings of 1990. In addition to performing and recording on their own, they are in demand by artists such as Quincy Jones, Diana Krall, Dee Dee Bridgewater, John Pizzarelli, Ernestine Anderson and Dr. John. John Clayton has received a total of six Grammy nominations and the orchestra comprises many top-rated musicians, some of whom have been with CHJO for the entire 21 year stint, including trombonists George Bohanon and Ira Nepus, and trumpeter Clay Jenkins. Most notable among the musicians, is 88 year-old "Snooky" Young who continues to tour and record with the orchestra.

JOANA CARNEIRO was a finalist of the 2002 Maazel-Vilar Conductor's Competition at Carnegie Hall where she was recognized by the jury for demonstrating a level of potential that holds great promise for her future career. Since then, her profile has grown quickly both in the U.S. and Europe, and recent engagements have included performances with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Santa Rosa Symphony, the Algarve Symphony, and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Carneiro recently completed her tenure as music director of Los Angeles' Young Musician's Debut Orchestra. In past seasons she served as music director of the Campus Philharmonia Orchestra (Michigan), and as Assistant Conductor of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. She has also conducted the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, the Macau Chamber Orchestra and the Beijing Orchestra at the International Musica Festival of Macau, the Portuguese National Symphony Orchestra, and the Beiras Philharmonic Orchestra. A native of Lisbon, Carneiro began her musical studies as a violist before receiving her conducting degree from the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra in Lisbon. Carneiro received her master's degree in orchestral conducting from Northwestern University, and she is currently pursuing her doctorate with a full scholarship at the University of Michigan, where she studies conducting with Kenneth Kiesler. In March 2004, Carneiro was decorated by the President of the Portuguese Republic, Jorge Sampaio, with the Commendation of the Order of the Infante Dom Henrique.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and in 1991 gave its name to the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, a resident ensemble that has filled a special niche in the musical life of Southern California. The 2004 season introduced audiences to a revitalized Hollywood Bowl, featuring a newly-constructed shell and stage and the addition of four stadium screens enhancing stage views in the venue. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 39th season. Attendance figures over the past several decades have soared: in 1980 the Bowl first topped the half-million mark and close to one million admissions have been recorded. In February 2007, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue for the third year in a row at the 18th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; the Bowl's summer music festival has become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers, and Disneyland.
