LA Phil Presents Concert as Part of the 2006/07 Songbook Series

Using her Black Cadillac recording as the roadmap, Rosanne Cash reflects on her soul-searching journey and musical legacy in an intensely personal performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Saturday, May 5, at

8 p.m. Complemented by self-narrated videos and insightful anecdotes, Cash weaves interpretations of American masters and the Carter-Cash heritage through her own rich song catalog. Cash is accompanied by John Leventhal, guitar, piano, vocals; Zev Katz, bass; and Dave Mattacks, drums.

With Black Cadillac, released in 2006, Cash documents her struggle and experience with the complexities of mortality, loss and redemption. Written during the final days, and eventual passing, of her stepmother, June Carter Cash, her father, Johnny Cash, and her mother, Vivian Cash Distin, the songs reflect her own personal journey, but also express universal concepts about loss and acceptance. Newsweek credited the recording in a review, "This is not just the best album she's made in a long time. This is the best album she's ever made." According to Allmusic.com, "Black Cadillac may be the crowning achievement of her career thus far."

This concert is part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Songbook Series, which concludes on June 5 with legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach accompanied by a vibrant string section.

ROSANNE CASH, a Grammy winner and a celebrated short story writer, has been called "one of the pre-eminent singer/songwriters of her day." Her songs - unflinchingly honest examinations of the inner journey we take and its impact on our relationships and vice versa - are finely wrought vignettes that while highly personal also strike a universal chord, as reflected in her string of eleven #1 singles. Cash's self-titled debut album was followed by her 1979 U.S. debut, Right or Wrong (Columbia Records). "No Memories Hangin' Round," a duet with Bobby Bare, was one of its three Top 25 hits. Her breakthrough album, 1981's Seven Year Ache, went Gold and yielded her first three #1 singles. Cash recorded 1982's Somewhere in the Stars and it contained two #1 singles, as did 1985's Rhythm & Romance, including "I Don't Know Why You Don't Want Me" which won Cash a Grammy. 1987's King's Record Shop yielded four #1 hits, including John Hiatt's "The Way We Make a Broken Heart." Cash was named Billboard's Top Singles Artist in 1988 and the next year she released Hits 1979-1989, scoring another #1 hit with the Beatles' "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party." In 1990 she released Interiors and The Wheel followed in 1993. 10 Song Demo (1996 Capitol Records) received a Grammy nomination for "Best Contemporary Folk Album." Cash also published her first book in 1996 - Bodies of Water, a short-story collection. In 2001 she published Songs Without Rhyme: Prose by Celebrated Songwriters, a volume based on one of her own personal tenets: that songwriting is in fact a vibrant form of literature. In March of 2003, Cash released the landmark Rules of Travel, which featured duets with Steve Earle and Sheryl Crow and what was to be the last song she would record with her father, "September When It Comes," a stunning rumination on mortality. In 2006, Rosanne released Black Cadillac. The album is remarkable not just for the context in which it was created but for the defining achievement it represents in the scope of her own artistry.
