  • Randy Newman Debuts at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Songbook Series Performance

    SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2006, AT 7:30 PM

Randy Newman, one of America's greatest living singer-songwriters and film composers, makes his debut at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Sunday, November 19, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. Randy Newman: Lonely at the Top features Newman performing solo at the piano, intimately showcasing the intelligence, grace and craft of his songs.

Randy Newman long ago established himself among today's sharpest and most caustic wits. One of modern pop's greatest storytellers, the Oscar-Emmy-Grammy winner uses his powerful, intense and evocative music to make audiences laugh, wince, and almost cry. Randy Newman's last performance presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association was at Hollywood Bowl's 2002 Opening Night Gala, when he was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame.

Originally part of the 2005/2006 Songbook Series at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Randy Newman: Lonely at the Top concert is rescheduled from the original April 8, 2006 performance date. The 2006/2007 Songbook Series at Walt Disney Concert Hall continues with legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach on February 25, 2007 and country music star Rosanne Cash on May 5, 2007.

Los Angeles native Randy Newman has had a prolific career writing pop songs and movie scores. Born into a famously musical family, Randy Newman was already a professional songwriter at seventeen. Newman received his first Grammy Award, Best Instrumental Composition, for his score for The Natural, which was also Oscar-nominated. In 1991, Newman received his first Emmy Award, Outstanding Achievement in Music and Lyrics, for "He's Guilty" from the pilot of Cop Rock. In 2001, after garnering 16 Oscar nominations, Newman received the Academy Award, Original Song, for "If I Didn't Have You" from Monsters, Inc. Well-known for his sense of satire and the wit in his music, Newman has recorded numerous albums and enjoyed massive success with his film work. His most recent release, The Randy Newman Songbok, Vol. 1 (2003) finds Newman singing and playing piano on powerful new solo versions of his early classics and recent gems, including "Louisiana 1927," "You Can Leave Your Hat On," "I Think It's Going to Rain Today," and "Sail Away." The album is an intimate and powerful reminder of the enduring work that established Newman as one of the most musically and lyrically ambitious singer songwriters ever to be at play in the fields of popular music.
