Guest conductor Gustavo Dudamel makes his U.S. debut leading the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday, September 13, at 8 p.m. The final Classical Tuesday concert of the summer, the program features Silvestre Revueltas's La noche de los Mayas and Tchaikovsky's beloved Symphony No. 5.

The 24-year-old Venezuelan conductor recently signed an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon, prompting the London Times to state, "…a conductor clearly going somewhere," and declare of his Proms debut performance at Royal Albert Hall that "every muscle snarled with tension; stand in the way of his baton and you'd be sliced in two."

Dudamel's career was launched in the youth orchestra system in Venezuela, widely praised for its social contributions to Venezuelan and Latin American young people. In his position as musical director of the Simón Bolívar National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, he conducts approximately 90 performances per season. The youth orchestra system in Venezuela celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2005 and encompasses music and social programs for over 250,000 young Venezuelans who begin their musical instruction at three years of age.

Revueltas wrote music that contains contemporary cross-cultural themes, making him more popular now than ever before. His rousing La noche de los Mayas, a suite drawn from his score for a film of the same name, evokes the spirit of Mayan culture through its reflection of Mexican folk music. The finale calls for no less than 11 percussionists. The piece was recorded by the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen on their all-Revueltas Sony Classical CD, which won the Diapason Award in 1999. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 was first performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1920.

Winner of the 2004 Bamberg Symphony Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition, Venezuelan conductor GUSTAVO DUDAMEL is also an accomplished violinist and composer. Since 1999, he has been the Musical Director of the Simón Bolívar National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela. Recently, he became Music Director of the Youth Orchestra of the Andean Countries. During the 2004/05 season, Gustavo Dudamel was selected to participate in the International Conductors Academy of the Allianz Cultural Foundation in London. During the 2005/2006 season, he will guest with symphony orchestras in England, France, Germany and Israel, among others. He is one of the leading talents to emerge in recent years, and his career is being closely followed throughout the classical music world. This performance at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic marks Gustavo Dudamel's U.S. debut.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and in 1991 gave its name to the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, a resident ensemble that has filled a special niche in the musical life of Southern California. The 2004 season introduced audiences to a revitalized Hollywood Bowl, featuring a newly-constructed shell and stage and the addition of four stadium screens enhancing stage views in the venue. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's mond close to one million admissions have been recorded. In February 2005, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue at the 16th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; the Bowl's summer music festival has become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers, and Disneyland.
