The annual Tchaikovsky Spectacular with Fireworks returns to the Hollywood Bowl on Friday, July 22 at
and Saturday, July 23 at 8:30 p.m., with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and guest violinist Jennifer Koh, led by British conductor Bramwell Tovey. A highlight of the all-Tchaikovsky program is the passionate, melodic Violin Concerto, performed by Koh, winner of the 1994 Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow. The program also includes Prelude and March from Sleeping Beauty and Polonaise and Waltz from Eugene Onegin, andconcludes in spectacular fashion with the perennial audience favorite, the 1812 Overture. Along with fireworks, the Overture features the USC Trojan Marching Band, Dr. Arthur C. Bartner, director. The Trojan Band is the only collegiate marching band in the country to appear on stage at the Hollywood Bowl and is featured almost every summer in the Overture's finale.

Bramwell Tovey, in addition to his music directorships with the Vancouver Symphony and Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, has worked internationally with a prestigious list of orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, the Toronto Symphony, the Montreal Symphony, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He was artistic director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for ten years, during which time Tovey founded a New Music Festival. Tovey has also premiered new choral works including the oratorio Resurrection by Canadian composer Victor Davies. He has conducted operas by Puccini, Strauss, Mozart, Menotti, Poulenc, Britten, and most recently Stravinsky, when he conducted The Rake's Progress with the Edmonton Opera. In addition to conducting, Tovey has a range of interests including composition. His new Cello Concerto was premiered at the New Music Festival in Winnipeg in January 2001. He has also composed for brass band and enjoyed great success with his Requiem, premiered by the Hannaford Street Silver Band in Toronto in 2000. Tovey is an accomplished jazz pianist and has performed and recorded in that idiom over the years.

Violinist Jennifer Koh continues to dazzle audiences with her ability to fuse intensity of temperament with a classical poise and elegance. As a virtuoso whose natural flair is combined with a probing intellectual acuity, Koh is committed to exploring connections between the pieces she plays, searching for similarities of voice between different composers, as well as within the works of a single composer. For the 2004-05 season, Koh performs numerous recitals and orchestral appearances throughout the U.S. and the world. A committed educator, Koh has also won high praise for her performances in classrooms around the country under her innovative Music Messenger outreach program. Now in its third year, the program continues to form an important part of her musical activities. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the National Foundation for the Advancement for the Arts, a scholarship program for high school students in the arts.

Since its beginning in 1880, the USC TROJAN MARCHING BAND has grown to become the largest spirit group on the University of Southern California campus. The modern band consists of 250 musicians and 30 tall flags, representing 60 major fields of undergraduate and graduate study. The Band has performed at the Rose Bowl, the Liberty Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, the Aloha Bowl, the Citrus Bowl, the Freedom Bowl, and the Cotton Bowl. The contemporary Trojan Band began in 1970 when DR. ARTHUR C. BARTNER, director, assumed leadership of the band. In Dr. Bartner's 31 years at USC, the Trojan Band has gained wide popularity throughout the nation with an impressive list of motion picture and television appearances including Forrest Gump as well as numerous other engagements, including performances with Doc Severinsen, Henry Mancini, Quincy Jones, Diana Ross, and Bill Conti, among others.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and in 1991 gave its name to the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, a resident ensemble that has filled a special niche in the musical life of Southern California. The 2004 season introduced audiences to a revitalized Hollywood Bowl, featuring a newly-constructed shell and stage and the addition of four stadium screens enhancing stage views in the venue. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 37th season. Attendance figures over the past several decades have soared: in 1980 the Bowl first topped the half-million mark and close to one million admissions have been recorded. In February 2005, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue at the 16th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; it is no wonder that the Bowl's summer music festival has become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers, and Disneyland.
