CHILDREN'S WORKSHOPS AT 10 AM; CONCERT AT 11 AM

Conducting Fellow Joana Carneiro leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the orchestra's Toyota Symphonies for Youth concert in a performance of excerpts from Esa-Pekka Salonen's Wing on Wing at Walt Disney Concert Hall, on Saturday, January 29 at 11 a.m. Wing on Wing is Salonen's tribute to Frank Gehry's architecture of Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The story opens with Sal, a young boy (actually a young Esa-Pekka Salonen!), at Walt Disney Concert Hall. In a dream, Frank Gehry comes to him and sends him on a quest. Sal must undertake a perilous journey through the imagination. Along the way there will be many dangers, such as sirens and storms, but there will also be helpers, such as the fish who will guide his way. During his journey, Sal makes a map of his imaginary travels. Sal returns to the stage, where he gives the map, a musical score, to conductor Joana. His journey complete, Sal can now sit back and enjoy the concert performance.

Throughout the theatrical segment, parts of Wing on Wing are heard; the program closes with a performance of a 12-minute segment of the piece.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic's Toyota Symphonies For Youth series take place on six Saturday mornings throughout the season. Before every concert, the Walt Disney Concert Hall becomes a musical playground with hands-on art making, musical activities, dance, theater, and storytelling. Workshops take place in the lobby and garden spaces one hour prior to the performance.

At the age of 27, JOANA CARNEIRO has attracted considerable attention as an outstanding young conductor. She is the recipient of the Young Musicians Foundation Conducting Grant and the BMI Foundation, Inc. Lionel Newman Conducting Study Grant. She serves as Music Director of the YMF Debut Orchestra, having won the Young Musicians Foundation's 2002 National Conductor Search. She continues in the footsteps of such YMF alumni as André Previn, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Myung-Whun Chung. A native of Lisbon, Portugal, Carneiro began her musical studies as a violist before receiving her conducting degree from the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra in Lisbon; she received her master's degree in orchestral conducting from Northwestern University. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at the University of Michigan. In 2003/04 Carneiro participated in the International Conductors' Academy of the Allianz Cultural Foundation with Kurt Masur and Christoph von Dohnányi in London. As a 2002 finalist of the Maazel-Vilar Conductor's Competition at Carnegie Hall, Carneiro was invited by the jury to conduct the Prelude to Act III of Richard Wagner's Lohengrin. She was a Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival in 2003.

BRYAN DAVIDSON is playwright and teacher. As a playwright, Bryan's play War Music, which is about musicians and composers in World War I and II, was most recently seen at the Geffen Playhouse. He also wrote a play for students called Reflecting Back for Cornerstone Theater Ensemble that was performed at the downtown Central Library. Bryan has a life-long love for music. He began playing violin in the fourth grade. As a teacher, Bryan runs a program called Playwrights in the Schools, which brings theater artists into the classroom.

JESSICA KUBZANSKY is an award-winning director and was recently awarded the LA Drama Critics Circle Margaret Hanford Award for Sustained Excellence in Theatre. Kubzansky's recent forays include the world premiere and Ovation Award-winning production of Bryan Davidson's War Music for Playwrights' Arena/Echo Theatre at LATC which went on to play at the Geffen Playhouse; Measure for Measure for A Noise Within; Amy's View as well as A Servant to Two Masters for ICT, and world premieres for the Mark Taper Forum New Works. Her productions have received numerous theatre honors, including the Scotsman's Fringe First, London Fringe, L.A. Drama Critics' Circle, LA an OC Weekly, Drama-Logue, Backstage West Garland, and Robby Awards. Kubzansky who has an MFA from the California Institute of Arts, a creative writing degree from John Hopkins University, was a V.U.S. at Harvard University, is a member of SSDC and teaches at UCLA.
