LOS ANGELES (November 16, 2022) – The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association has revealed the first details of the 2023 Hollywood Bowl summer season with headlining performances by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (June 21), Jill Scott (June 22), Louis Tomlinson (June 30), The Beach Boys (July 2–4), and the LA Phil performing the West-Coast debut of Chris Thile’s narrative song cycle/mandolin concerto (August 22).
Psych, krautrock, thrash, prog, experimental synth—if there’s a style of wild, exploratory music that King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard haven’t tried their hand at yet, it’s only a matter of time. The Australian group has put out a staggering 23 albums in 10 years (six in 2022 alone!) without ever repeating themselves. Their intense restlessness has made them arguably Australia’s most innovative, important, and productive rock band and won them considerable critical acclaim. Their mammoth live shows have made them festival headliners and won them converts across the globe. They may not touch every corner of the cosmos, but in this three-hour marathon set at the Bowl on June 21, they’re going to try. Lace up your shoes and get ready to keep pace with one of psychedelic music’s most prolific groups of explorers.
When Jill Scott began working on her first album in 1999, she was an understudy for a production of Rent that was touring Canada. Now, she’s one of R&B and soul’s most influential and beloved singers and songwriters. Or, as Essence puts it, “Jill is Black culture at its highest, purest form—innovative, creative, radiating pride, connected to our roots, a beautifully breathing embodiment of love for ourselves, our loved ones, and our community.” And it all started with Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1. For her show at the Bowl on June 22, she performs her warm, thoughtful, and empowering debut album it in its entirety.
British singer and songwriter Louis Tomlinson believes brighter days are ahead. That’s why the former member of One Direction named his second solo album Faith in the Future. And if that album is any indication, Tomlinson’s musical vision is as bright and optimistic as his view of the world. Fresh off his chart-topping album Walls and his first-ever solo tour, he splashes into the Bowl with a vibrant mix of sounds: dancefloor bangers, blasts of punk, music for Iberian sunsets, early-morning easy listening, and late-night confessionals. For his Hollywood Bowl debut on June 30, it will all be delivered with the breezy confidence and up-close sensitivity that’s made him a star around the world.
The Beach Boys are synonymous with the California lifestyle and have become an American icon to fans around the world. Ever since lead singer Mike Love penned the lyrics to the group’s first hit, “Surfin’” (1961), dozens of their chart toppers have become eternal anthems of American youth: “Surfin’ USA,” “Surfer Girl,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” “California Girls,” “Help Me, Rhonda,” “Barbara Ann,” “Good Vibrations,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Rock and Roll Music,” and “Kokomo.” The Beach Boys have sold over 100 million records worldwide and have received more than 33 RIAA Platinum and Gold record awards. They were also honored at the 2001 Grammy® Awards with the Lifetime Achievement Award. With more than five decades of touring under their belts, The Beach Boys have performed more concerts than any major rock band in history. The Beach Boys are led by Mike Love, along with longtime member Bruce Johnston. Joining the iconic band for the annual July 4th Fireworks Spectacular, July 2, 3, & 4 is the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, led by conductor Thomas Wilkins.
MacArthur Fellow and four-time Grammy® Award-winning mandolinist, singer, and composer/songwriter Chris Thile is described by The Guardian (U.K.) as “that rare being: an all-round musician who can settle into any style, from bluegrass to classical,” and NPR hails him as a “genre-defying musical genius.” A prodigy who began playing the mandolin at age four, Thile began performing publicly as a young child, got his first Grammy nomination at age 16, and his first Grammy win at just 21. A founding member of the critically acclaimed bands Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers, Thile has been credited with creating a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike. For the Bowl concert on August 22, the multi-talented Thile will unveil his new work, which he describes as “a big ol’ narrative song cycle/mandolin concerto that tells, plays, and sings the true story of the time I attempted to impress a Starbucks executive and accidentally met Carrie Fisher as a result. It’s a DOOZY!”
Dates for other popular annual events at the Hollywood Bowl have also been scheduled, including Movie Night on Sunday, July 9; Smooth Summer Jazz on Sunday, August 27; and the Sing-A-Long Sound of Music, hosted by Melissa Peterman, on Saturday, September 16.
With the Hollywood Bowl serving as the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for over 100 years, the 2023 season continues the tradition of presenting classical concerts every Tuesday and Thursday night, with Gustavo Dudamel, the LA Phil and a roster of star-studded guest artists. Jazz Plus nights offer an eclectic trip through the world of jazz and beyond, with the LA Phil’s Creative Chair for Jazz Herbie Hancock at the helm. Weekends will be filled with some of the biggest names in popular music, the annual fully staged musical, films and film music, and the KCRW Festival featuring cutting-edge musicians.
The full Hollywood Bowl 2023 season will be announced in February 2023.
