The Los Angeles Philharmonic's Chamber Music Society continues the orchestra's five-year Shostakovich cycle of symphonic works and string quartets on Monday, April 28, with a concert featuring Shostakovich string quartets. The concert, which takes place at 8 p.m. in Gindi Auditorium at the University of Judaism, offers an opportunity to experience performances by members of the Philharmonic in an intimate setting.

Shostakovich's fifteen string quartets are seen by many as one of his crowning achievements. After a slow start, the quartet grew in importance to Shostakovich's musical output and eventually became the vehicle he used for expressing his private thoughts.

Shostakovich began composing at the age of 14. He studied at the Leningrad Conservatory where his teachers included Glazunov and Steinberg. His first symphony, composed at age 19, brought him international acclaim and subsequent works made him the Soviet Union's leading composer. In 1948, Shostakovich, as well as other prominent Soviet composers were denounced in a party resolution by Andrei Zhdanov, one of Stalin's chief henchman. During the years following his denunciation and the death of Stalin (1952), Shostakovich composed the Fourth and Fifth Quartets, featured on this evening's program. Both received premieres in 1953.
