  • ST. THOMAS THE APOSTLE CHURCH

    MONDAY, MAY 19, 2014, AT 8 PM

Leadership support for the LA Phil's Educational Initiatives is provided by the Peggy Bergmann YOLA Endowment Fund, Anonymous, Lee and Hope Landis Warner YOLA Student Fund, Norma D. Kayser Trust, Max H. Gluck Foundation, Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, The Rose Hills Foundation, Amgen Foundation, Walt Disney Company, and Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., Inc.

Additional support for Neighborhood Concerts is provided by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic and St. Thomas the Apostle Church present a free neighborhood chamber concert featuring LA Phil members Burt Hara, clarinet; Mitchell Newman, violin; Camille Avellano, violin; Michael Larco, viola; Barry Gold, cello; and students of Youth Orchestra Los Angeles at Heart of Los Angeles (YOLA at HOLA) performing works by Vivaldi and Mozart.

YOLA at HOLA is a partnership between the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and Heart of Los Angeles, a non-profit organization that provides free academics, arts and athletics programs to underserved and at-risk youth in the Rampart District. YOLA at HOLA musicians first played a side-by-side concert with LA Phil musicians just months after the site opened in 2010. This concert, which marks the 4th annual ‘side-by-side,’ reflects the consistent progress of YOLA at HOLA student musicians and demonstrates the ongoing, valuable interactions between YOLA at HOLA students and the LA Phil.  At this concert students will play violins, violas and cellos. Most have been playing for 3 years. LA Phil musicians enhance YOLA programming through teaching and performance opportunities at YOLA sites.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s neighborhood concerts in the community include free orchestra, chamber music and jazz concerts in churches, community centers and other local venues around Southern California.  The Los Angeles Philharmonic has been presenting free neighborhood concerts for over 20 years, as part of the organization’s dedication to making music accessible to the widest possible audience.
