Russian conductor Vladimir Jurowski, music director of the Glyndebourne Opera, makes his Philharmonic debut when he conducts the Philharmonic at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on Friday, October 11 at 1 p.m.; Saturday, October 12 at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, October 13 at 7:30 p.m. The orchestra performs excerpts from Igor Stravinsky's ballet, The Fairy's Kiss, as well as the Manfred Symphony by Tchaikovsky. Upbeat Live, a free pre-concert event with music expert Robert Fink in the Pavilion's Grand Hall one hour before each performance.

Stravinsky wrote the allegorical ballet The Fairy's Kiss as a four-scene piece for Ida Rubinstein, founder of a new ballet company, using the mysterious tale of the Ice Maiden by Hans Christian Andersen. Loosely based on songs and piano pieces originated by Tchaikovsky, The Fairy's Kiss was written in 1928 and received its premiere at the Paris Opera late that year.

Lord Byron's poem, Manfred, a dark, Gothic work that sprang from the same ghost storytelling sessions with Mary Shelley as her novel Frankenstein did, was written in 1817 and published the following year. The poem inspired several composers to tell the tale of the guilt-ridden youth obsessed with his sister's death. At the suggestion of fellow composer and friend Mili Balakirev, Tchaikovsky composed his Manfred Symphony, using music by Berlioz as inspiration for several sections, in 1885 and it premiered in Moscow in 1886.

Conductor VLADIMIR JUROWSKI, was appointed Music Director of the Glyndebourne Opera in 2002 and made his debut there this summer. Born in Moscow, he studied in Germany at the music academies in Dresden and Berlin under Colin Davis, Rolf Reuter, and Semion Skigin. In 1995 he made his debut at the Wexford Festival conducting Rimsky-Korsakov's May Night, which launched his international career. He was subsequently invited to the Royal Opera House to conduct Nabucco, and during recent seasons has conducted in many of the major opera houses of the world including the Metropolitan Opera, Welsh National Opera, Komische Oper Berlin, La Monnaie, the Semperoper Dresden and the Opéra National de Paris. Since 2000, Jurowski has been Principal Guest Conductor of the Teatro Comunale Orchestra in Bologna. Future guest conducting engagements include concerts with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Israel, Rotterdam, and Oslo Philharmonics, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.
