  • Cellist Alisa Weilerstein Performs in This LA Phil 2010/11 Visiting Orchestras Series Concert

    TUESDAY, MARCH 22, 2011, AT 8 PM

    WHAT:

Conductor Yuri Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Russia’s oldest symphony orchestra, take the stage at Walt Disney Concert Hall in a program of thrilling masterworks, Tuesday, March 22, at 8 p.m. The concert opens with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture, which was presented to the public just before Christmas of 1888 by the Russian Symphony Orchestra of St. Petersburg, of which the composer has recently been appointed chief conductor. Also on the program are Dmitri Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1, featuring star American cellist Alisa Weilerstein, and Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4, his final essay in symphonic form. The concert is part of the LA Phil’s 2010/11 Visiting Orchestras series.

Temirkanov, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra since 1988, regularly undertakes major international tours and recordings with the orchestra. He also serves as Music Director of the Teatro Regio di Parma as well as Music Director Emeritus of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

The St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1882, the same year that, on the Order of Alexander III, the Court Musical Choir was established – the prototype of today’s Honored Collective of the Russian Federation.

Weilerstein has attracted widespread attention for playing that combines a natural virtuosic command and technical precision with impassioned musicianship. The intensity of her playing has regularly been lauded, as has the spontaneity and sensitivity of her interpretations. Following her Zankel Hall recital debut in 2008, Justin Davidson of New York Magazine said: “Whatever she plays sounds custom-composed for her, as if she has a natural affinity with everything.”
