  • Nov. 16, 2010
  • Program Led by 2010 Dudamel Conducting Fellow Jean-Michaël Lavoie

    TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2010, AT 8 PM

    WHAT:

The Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group, under the direction of conductor Jean-Michaël Lavoie, brings to the Walt Disney Concert Hall stage a program focusing on the music of award-winning composer George Crumb, Tuesday, November 16, at 8 p.m. The concert, part of the LA Phil’s Green Umbrella 2010/11 series, presents Crumb’s The River of Life (Songs of Joy and Sorrow) – American Songbook No. 1, a 2003 work the composer describes as “A Cycle of Hymns, Spirituals and Revival Tunes for Singer, Percussion Quartet and Amplified Piano,” with soprano Tony Arnold. Also on the program is Crumb’s 1970 classic Ancient Voices of Children (A Cycle of Songs on Texts by Federico García Lorca), featuring Arnold, along with Avery Roberts as the boy soprano in the piece.

Jean-Michaël Lavoie is quickly establishing an international reputation. The 28-year-old French Canadian made his debut with the LA Phil this season as a 2010 Dudamel Conducting Fellow.

The LA Phil’s groundbreaking Green Umbrella new music series is a favorite of adventurous, open-minded and curious music lovers. The series, with a more-than-20-year history, offers three more events during the 2010/11 season.

Remaining concerts for the 2010/11 Green Umbrella series are: Benjamin Schwartz leading the New Music Group and sopranos Kiera Duffy and Audrey Elizabeth Luna, as well as countertenor Michael Maniaci, in a program featuring the U.S. premiere of Anders Hillborg’s Vaporised Tivoli (March 15, 2011); Thomas Adès in a dual role, conducting the New Music Group and performing piano in an Aspects of Adès concert with mezzo-soprano Katalin Károlyi and presenting the LA Phil-commissioned world premiere of a new work by Francisco Coll (April 5, 2011); and LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams leading the New Music Group, violinist Jennifer Koh and electric guitarist Steven Mackey in a program featuring LA Phil-commissioned world premieres by Missy Mazzoli, Gabriel Kahane and Andrew Norman and the West Coast premiere of Mackey’s Four Iconoclastic Episodes (May 24, 2011).
