The LA Phil New Music Group begins the Green Umbrella 2010/11 season with a program featuring music from Bang on a Can composers Michael Gordon, Julia Wolfe and David Lang, Tuesday, October 19, at 8 p.m. The program includes Gordon’s Weather One, Wolfe’s Dark Full Ride and Early That Summer and Lang’s “Heroin” from Songs for Lou Reed (accompanied by video by Doug Aitken) as well as the West Coast premiere of Lang’s Pierced. The performance is led by conductor Jeffrey Milarsky and features Grammy award nominee vocalist Theo Bleckmann and LA Phil cellist Gloria Lum performing “Heroin.”

Begun in N.Y. by Gordon, Lang and Wolfe as a one-day festival in 1987, Bang on a Can has grown to become a widely influential enterprise that commissions, performs, creates, presents and records contemporary music.

The LA Phil’s groundbreaking Green Umbrella new music series is a tribute to adventurous, open-minded and curious music lovers. The series, with a more-than-20-year history, offers four more concerts during the 2010/11 season.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group was launched in 1981 under composer-in-residence and Philharmonic percussionist William Kraft, as one of several contemporary music projects envisioned and organized by the Philharmonic’s Managing Director at the time, Ernest Fleischmann. Praised for its imaginative programming and expert and enthusiastic performances, the New Music Group is recognized as one of the premier performing groups of its kind in the country.

Remaining concerts for the 2010/11 Green Umbrella series are: Jean-Michaël Lavoie leading the New Music Group in a George Crumb-focused concert featuring soprano Tony Arnold (November 6, 2010); Benjamin Schwartz leading the New Music Group and soprano Kiera Duffy in a program featuring the U.S. premiere of Anders Hillborg’s Vaporised Tivoli (March 15, 2011); Thomas Adès in a dual role, conducting the New Music Group and performing piano in an Aspects of Adès concert with mezzo-soprano Katalin Károlyi and presenting the LA Phil-commissioned world premiere of a new work by Francisco Coll (April 15, 2011); and LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams leading the New Music Group, violinist Jennifer Koh and electric guitarist Steven Mackey in a program featuring LA Phil-commissioned world premieres by Missy Mazzoli, Gabriel Kahane, Andrew Norman and the West Coast premiere of Mackey’s Four Iconoclastic Episodes (May 24, 2011).

An Upbeat Live pre-concert event takes place in Walt Disney Concert Hall’s BP Hall one hour prior to the concert, and is free to all ticket holders. Veronika Krausas, composer and Professor at Thornton School of Music at USC, hosts.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, under the vibrant leadership of Gustavo Dudamel, presents the finest in orchestral and chamber music, recitals, new music, jazz, world music and holiday concerts at two of the most remarkable locations anywhere to experience music – Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. In addition to a 30-week winter subscription season at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the LA Phil presents a 12-week summer festival at the legendary Hollywood Bowl, summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and home of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.
