  • 10-Week Series Airs on Classical KUSC

KUSC Broadcast Series of Los Angeles Philharmonic Made Possible Through Support of Office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky

Ten Los Angeles Philharmonic concerts from the current Hollywood Bowl Summer 2010 season, including three led by Gustavo Dudamel – his first Bowl subscription concerts as Music Director – will be broadcast on Classical KUSC beginning Saturday, August 7th. This is the fourth year of the orchestra’s summer partnership with Los Angeles’ listener-sponsored classical music radio station.

The concerts, recorded live on selected Classical Tuesdays and Thursdays (as well as the Sunday Sunset presentation of Carmen), feature the LA Phil with a stellar roster of guest artists and conductors. Hosted and produced by KUSC’s Brian Lauritzen and executive produced by KUSC’s Gail Eichenthal, the programs air at 2 p.m., Saturdays from August 7 through October 9, and are heard widely throughout much of Southern California on 91.5 Classical KUSC, 88.5 KPSC in Palm Springs, 91.1 KDSC in Thousand Oaks, 99.7 KESC in Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo, and 88.7 KQSC in Santa Barbara. The programs can also be heard online at KUSC.org, and each concert will be available for online streaming for one week following the broadcast. Interviews and features with soloists and orchestra members throughout the series offer unique insights and give listeners a more in-depth perspective. The project is made possible through support from the office of Zev Yaroslavsky, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors – Third District.

The series opens Saturday, August 7, at 2 p.m., with a broadcast of the LA Phil’s Hollywood Bowl July 6 performance conducted by Grant Gershon and featuring three soloists and the Los Angeles Master Chorale (LAMC) in two settings of the Gloria – by Vivaldi and Poulenc – and Handel’s “Hallelujah” Chorus. The concert also included a tribute to Ernest Fleischmann, former LA Phil Executive Vice President and Managing Director, delivered by LA Phil President and Chief Executive Officer Deborah Borda, and a performance of “Lacrymosa” from Mozart’s Requiem (Süssmayer edition) with the LAMC and the LA Phil, led by Gershon.

“KUSC cherishes its long association with the Los Angeles Philharmonic,” says Eichenthal, “and this fourth Hollywood Bowl broadcast season particularly is filled with thrilling soloists and colorful, unconventional repertoire. Our listeners will be delighted.”

“Classical concerts at the Hollywood Bowl are a staple of summertime in Los Angeles and I’m delighted to bring that tradition to the KUSC airwaves again this season,” says Lauritzen. “I’m particularly looking forward to broadcasting all of LA Philharmonic Music Director Gustavo Dudamel’s concerts at the Bowl this year—especially the performance of Bizet’s Carmen.”

“Thanks to our long-time partner KUSC, we can share the exciting work that is taking place at the Hollywood Bowl this summer. The online availability of our concert broadcasts expands our listenership even further, developing our core local audience as well as appealing to new audiences across the nation.” says Deborah Borda, President of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. "We are grateful to Classical KUSC and to County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky for sharing this vision and for making these broadcasts possible.”

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and is home to the best and brightest in all genres of music. The 2004 season introduced audiences to a revitalized Hollywood Bowl, featuring a newly-constructed shell and stage and the addition of four stadium screens enhancing stage views in the venue. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 42nd season. In January 2010, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue for the sixth year in a row at the 20th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; the Bowl's summer music festival has become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers, and Disneyland.
