An All-Prokofiev Program with Soloist Lise de la Salle

Music Director of the LA Opera, James Conlon, comes to Walt Disney Concert Hall to lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic in an all-Prokofiev program including Symphony No. 1, Piano Concerto No. 1 and selections from Romeo and Juliet, Thursday and Saturday, March 4 and 6, at 8 p.m., as well as Sunday, March 7, at 2 p.m.

As one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century, a dynamic pianist and conductor, Sergei Prokofiev’s music was both loathed and adored by the press of his time.  The concerts conducted by Conlon, including Piano Concerto No. 1 played by the talented young pianist Lise de la Salle in her debut at Walt Disney Concert Hall, embody his triumph at making music that invoked thought and passion from the listener.

James Conlon’s 2009/10 orchestral engagements include performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the U.S., Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, Orchestra del Teatro Communale Bologna, Orquesta Nacional de Espana and the National Philharmonic of Russia in Europe, and a European tour with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. 

Private lessons and her first competition successes led Lise de la Salle to study Russian repertoire. The seven piano concertos she currently plays include one each by Prokofiev and Shostakovich (their respective First Concertos). She is sure of herself creatively yet open-minded, perfectly controlled in her playing yet not content to stick to the status quo.  

The concerts are preceded by Upbeat Live pre-performance discussions which are free to ticket-holders, and occur in BP Hall one hour prior to the performances. Asadour Santourian, Artistic Advisor and Administrator of Aspen Music Festival and School, hosts.

When available, choral bench seats ($17) will be released for sale to selected Philharmonic, Colburn Celebrity Series, and Baroque Variations performances beginning at noon on the Tuesday of the second week prior to the concert.
