About this Piece

Der Zigeunerbaron (The Gypsy Baron, 1885), concerns a high-stationed political refugee who returns to his wasted land in Hungary, joins a band of gypsies, goes off to war in Spain, and finally returns to Hungary to marry his gypsy sweetheart, who is not really a gypsy but a high-born lady. The Overture contains temperamental, dashing music of “The Gypsy Makes His Violin Cry” variety, and also, midway — what else? — a beguiling Viennese waltz.
