Translating these song titles into European languages and putting them into high classical contexts such as “Introduktion, Präludium, und Fugue” reminds us of our cultural confusion about artistic hierarchies, accepting European vernacular tunes as the subject of art music, while regarding a similar use of American popular music as cross-over entertainment and somehow something lesser in aspiration and achievement.
