About this Piece

The Geminiani concerto on the program is a reworking not of a trio sonata, but of the final solo violin sonata of Corelli’s Opus 5, a set of variations on “La Follia,” which was so popular that for generations any collection of music was as likely as not to contain a set of variations on it. Geminiani created a genuine grand concerto by adding a viola part and an active second violin part to Corelli’s violin-and-bass texture.
