About this Artist

Tenor saxophonist MICHAEL BRECKER credits John Coltrane with inspiring him to pursue jazz saxophone as a career. Brecker moved to New York, where in 1973, he joined the quintet of Horace Silver, later co-leading the Brecker Brothers Band. The brothers Brecker opened the legendary Seventh Avenue South club, where late night jams evolved into the band Steps Ahead, with whom Brecker recorded six albums. Soon he was recording and performing with the most respected and renowned names in jazz, including Chet Baker, George Benson, Dave Brubeck, Quincy Jones, and Charles Mingus, to name a few. His first solo album, in 1987, was quickly followed by a second, which won him his first Grammy. In 1992, he rejoined his brother for another release which earned two more Grammys, and in 1997, a recording with Pat Metheny, Dave Holland, and Jack DeJohnette was honored with two more Grammys. His current release, Time Is of the Essence, was inspired by his desire to include a Hammond B-3 organ in his works and to perform with organist Larry Goldings.
