About this Artist

DAVID GERE, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance at UCLA, where he teaches courses in arts activism. His book How to Make Dances in an Epidemic: Tracking Choreography in the Age of AIDS received the award for outstanding book publication from the Congress on Research in Dance and was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award. As director of the UCLA Art & Global Health Center, Gere has co-curated a trilogy of AIDS/art exhibitions: MAKE ART/STOP AIDS (2008), The A.R.T. Show (2011), and Through Positive Eyes (2016), the latter of which is set to tour the US, starting at the UCLA Fowler Museum, in September 2019. Gere encountered his first performance by Meredith Monk forty years ago, at La Mama in New York, and he wrote his M.A. thesis on Monk’s Quarry.
