American tenor THOMAS YOUNG has performed both in concert and in operatic productions with such prestigious institutions as the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Avery Fisher Hall, the Salzburg Festival, Covent Garden Opera House and the Barbican in London, with many of today’s great conductors, including Zubin Mehta, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Kent Nagano and Dennis Russell Davis.

Performing extensively in a large and varied repertoire, he counts among his main “fans” such directors and composers as Peter Sellars, Tan Dun, Anthony Davis and John Adams. Anthony Davis revised his opera The Life and Times of Malcolm X writing a supplementary role for Young to accommodate his versatile vocal and acting talents, and John Adams wrote the roles of Molqi and Jonathan Rumor in The Death of Klinghoffer with Young in mind, a production which was premiered at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels and subsequently was presented at the San Francisco Opera. Further notable world premieres were Amistad by Anthony Davis at Lyric Opera Chicago and Tan Dun’s Marco Polo which toured to London (the Barbican), the Biennale in Munich and to the Hong Kong Festival to great acclaim.

Upcoming engagements include a staged production of Stravinsky’s Biblical Scenes for the Netherlands Opera under the direction of Peter Sellars, Poulenc’s Les Mamelles de Tiresias in concert version conducted by Simon Rattle, and Kurt Weill’s Street Scene with the Radio Symphony Orchestra, Berlin and Lawrence Foster. His recording of Von Heute auf Morgen with the Residentie Orchestra is due to be released on Deutsche Grammophon under the direction of Oliver Knussen.
