One of the most celebrated dramatic sopranos of today, IRÉNE THEORIN is a regular guest at opera houses and concert venues across the world. Particularly associated with German dramatic repertoire, she has garnered huge acclaim for her intense musicality, engaging performances, and vocal flexibility. A graduate of the Music Academy and Royal Opera School in Copenhagen, Theorin has performed at Teatro alla Scala, Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Berliner Staatsoper, Staatsoper Vienna, Salzburg Festival, Bayerische Staatsoper, Opéra de Paris, Semperoper Dresden and at the Bayreuth Festival.

The 2016/17 season sees Theorin making a highly anticipated role debut as the Dyer’s wife in Die Frau ohne Schatten at Staatsoper Berlin. As Brünnhilde she can be heard in Die Walküre at the New National Theatre Tokyo and Oper Leipzig and in The Ring Cycle in Budapest. In summer 2017 she sings Turandot with the Macerata Opera Festival. On the concert platform she makes appearances in China with Four Last Songs; in Budapest and with the LA Phil in Wagner concerts; in Malmö for a New Year’s Eve Gala concert; and both a Strauss concert and Lied recital at Stockholm Concert Hall.

Recent engagements include Brünnhilde in The Ring Cycle (La Scala, Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Washington National Opera, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Berliner Staatsoper, the Wagner Festival in Budapest, Oper Leipzig, Cologne, and New National Theatre Tokyo), Isolde (Bayreuth Festival, Théâtre de la Monnaie, Washington National Opera, Wiener Staatsoper, Vlaamse Opera, Tokyo, Berlin, Copenhagen), Elektra (Salzburg Festival, Bayerische Staatsoper, Opéra de Paris), Turandot (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, San Francisco Opera, Essen, Tokyo, Tel Aviv, Guangzhou, Dresden, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Metropolitan Opera New York, Bayerische Staatsoper, and Arena di Verona), and Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana (The Royal Danish Theatre, Copenhagen and The Mikhailovsky Theatre).

Last season Theorin returned to the Liceu for Götterdämmerung and to Berliner Staatsoper for The Ring Cycle under the musical direction of Daniel Barenboim. Other engagements included a new production of Götterdämmerung at Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Elektra in Dresden, Isolde at Oper Stuttgart, Tove in Gurre-Lieder, Opéra National de Paris with Phillipe Jordan, and the title role of Turandot at Royal Opera House Muscat and at Festival Castell de Peralada.

Her DVD recordings include Elektra from Salzburg Festival and Götterdämmerung from the Teatro alla Scala, both released by Arthaus, Tristan und Isolde from Bayreuth on Opus Arte, and the award-winning Ring Cycle from Copenhagen on Decca. In March 2015, she was awarded singer of the year in Spain for her interpretation of Brünnhilde in Die Walküre in Barcelona 2014, and she has been knighted the Order of the Dannebrog by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.
