ANTHONY PATERAS (b.1979) is a composer/performer active within pre-meditated and intuitive creative contexts. His work is focused on expanding the organizational possibilities of sound through an exploratory approach to timbre, form, and instrumental performance, drawing from a broad range of acoustic and electronic sonic materials.
Live, he appears regularly throughout Europe and Australasia on prepared piano in the Pateras/Baxter/Brown trio, on voice & electronics with Robin Fox, and playing prepared piano solo or as a conductor of his own notated works. Additionally, he is founding member of the electro-acoustic sextet Twitch, a vital redefinition of the contemporary music ensemble model.
He has released numerous albums, recording full-length releases for Tzadik, Editions Mego (with Robin Fox), Synaesthesia (with Pateras/Baxter/Brown), and Quecksilber (with Beta Erko) - his next release being a double album exploring the extremities of piano music with Chris Abrahams of The Necks. He additionally writes music for short films, working regularly with filmmakers Eron Sheean, Pia Borg, and Ben Hackworth.
As a composer, his notated music has received performances from the Dutch Radio Kammerorkest, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Flux String Quartet, Slave Pianos, percussionist Vanessa Tomlinson, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Recent distinctions include a recommendation at the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers in Paris (2004), an honorable mention at the EAR Radio Competition in Budapest (2003), and an honorable mention at the Gaudeamus Music Week (2004). He is currently composing a new percussion sextet with electronics for the Slagwerkgroep Den Haag, which he will conduct at its premiere in Amsterdam.
Pateras was a finalist for the 2005 Freedman Classical Music Fellowship, with recent performance highlights in 2006 including premieres of his solo prepared piano work Continuums and Chasms in Holland and Portugal, a multi-speaker performance on the GRM Acousmonium in Paris with Robin Fox, a marathon performance at the Erase/Reset electronic music festival in Berlin, and the US premiere of Continuums and Chasms (vii) at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. He was also recently featured on ABC [Australian Broadcasting Commission] TV's Set program, presenting pieces with Twitch, Pateras/Baxter/Brown and Robin Fox to a national audience.
For 2007 he has been commissioned to write two new major works: a quadruple quartet for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, as well as a series of interludes for chamber orchestra and electronics for the Australian Chamber Orchestra. In both of these works, Pateras will appear as a soloist on amplified prepared piano. Additionally for 2007, he has been invited to France's Musique Action Festival to appear with fellow musicians David Brown, Sean Baxter, Robin Fox, and Natasha Anderson in a curatorial focus on current Australian experimental music practice.
Pateras' prepared piano work was heard on the François Tetaz soundtrack to the feature film Wolf Creek, his own film music has been heard at festivals in the US and Canada (Telluride, Hawaii, Mill Valley, Palm Springs, Montreal), South America (Rio, Sao Paulo), Europe (Cannes, La Huesca, Dresden, Bilbao, Edinburgh, Cork, Message to Man), and all major film festivals in Australia.
He is currently completing a PhD in composition at Monash University, Melbourne.
