About this Artist

Since graduating from the USC Thornton School of Music with degrees in French horn and voice, JONATHAN MACK has performed as a lyric tenor throughout the United States, Europe, and Australia. For four years, Mack lived in Germany with his family where he was the leading lyric tenor for the opera houses of Kiel and Dortmund. His guest engagements took him throughout West Germany and France, including Hamburg, Heidelberg, Stuttgart, and Cleremont-Ferrand. Now in his 15th season with the Los Angeles Opera, Mack has performed over 40 roles, including Ferrando in Mozart's Così fan tutte, Kudrjás in Janácek's Kátya Kabanová, Quint in Britten's Turn of the Screw, and Orpheus in Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld. Appearances with other companies include Belmonte in Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio for Netherlands Opera, Lysander in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream for Kentucky Opera, Bob Boles in Britten's Peter Grimes for Vancouver Opera, and the Steersman in Wagner's Flying Dutchman for Opera Columbus. Most recently he made his sixth appearance with the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival singing Tamino in The Magic Flute. This season Mack appears in Los Angeles Opera productions of Mozart's Magic Flute and Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades.

Mack's concert work includes engagements with the London Symphony Orchestra, Chautauqua Festivals, the Carmel Bach Festival, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Minnesota Orchestra with conductors including Giulini, Mehta, Previn, Boulez, Rattle, Hogwood, and Tilson Thomas. Recent performances include a tour of the province of Quebec in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Montreal Metropolitan and Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde with the Santa Monica Symphony. In demand as a studio singer, Mack can be heard on numerous soundtracks including Jurassic Park, Amistad, Anastasia, and Dinosaurs.

Jonathan Mack is featured as soloist on six recordings: Gagliano's La Daphne for ABC Records; choral lieder by Brahms and Schumann with the William Hall Chorale on Klavier Records; three recordings on the Nonesuch label: two with the Los Angeles Vocal Arts Ensemble of Brahms's Liebeslieder Waltzes and Rossini's Sins of My Old Age, and one with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under André Previn of William Kraft's Contextures II. Most recently on a Crystal CD, Mack recorded John Biggs' Songs of Laughter, Love, and Tears.

Mack is a member of the vocal arts faculty at the USC Thornton School of Music.
