About this Artist

ARTHUR LEVERING received his musical education at Colby College, Yale University, and Boston University. He has been a fellow in composition at the Aspen Music Festival, the June in Buffalo Festival, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival, the MacDowell Colony, and Yaddo. His awards include a 1994 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the 1992 Lee Ettelson Composers Award from Composers, Inc., 2 Composers Guild 1st Prizes, and the 1988 Malloy Miller Composition Prize (Boston University). In 1996 he was awarded the Frederic A. Juilliard/Walter Damrosch Rome Prize Fellowship from the American Academy in Rome. He has received commissions from the Music Teachers National Association, the Dinosaur Annex Music Ensemble, the Brass Consortium, the Boston Conservatory Chamber Ensemble, Boston Musica Viva (Barlow Foundation Commission), and pianist Donald Berman. His works have been performed in Britain, France, and Italy, as well as in the U.S.A.. Some of Mr. Levering's music is published by Edizioni Musicali EDI-PAN in Rome. Recent performances include the premiere of Time's Arrow (orch.) by the Cleveland Chamber Symphony in Cleveland, April 22, 1996 (described by Donald Rosenberg of the Cleveland Plain Dealer as "a cascade of fascinating ideas...cataclysmic climaxes and delicate nuances applied with colorful economy. The interest never flags through the score's 15 minutes.") Upcoming performances include Twenty Ways Upon the Bells (seven players), played by the L.A. Philharmonic New Music Group in Los Angeles, April 28, 1997 (Japan America Theatre) and New York, May 1, 1997 (Alice Tully Hall).
