Cellist Dahae Kim joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic as Assistant Principal in 2015 after two seasons with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as Assistant and Acting Principal. She completed her studies at the New England Conservatory of Music in 2013 as a recipient of the Gregor Piatigorsky Scholarship, having earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees as a student of Laurence Lesser and Paul Katz of the Cleveland Quartet. She also studied privately with cellist Bernard Greenhouse of the Beaux Arts Trio. She won first place in the Hudson Valley String Competition, was a participant at the Tanglewood Music Center for three seasons and served as Principal Cello of the National Repertory Orchestra. She was born in Seoul and first studied music with her mother, who taught her piano and violin. At the age of 8 she moved to New York with her family and studied with Irene Sharp and New York Philharmonic cellist Qiang Tu. She performed the Lalo, Saint-Saëns, and Shostakovich cello concertos as well as the Benjamin Lees Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra and regularly performs in the chamber music and Green Umbrella series at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Other than the cello, she loves arts and crafts, travel, pets, and craft cocktails.
