About this Artist
hornroh modern alphorn quartet was founded in summer 2000 for an engagement at the Munich Opera Festival by four professional wind players from Basel with the intention of linking traditional alphorn music with modern, contemporary thoughts and playing techniques. Using original compositions, improvisations as well as commissioning new compositions, developing instruments, and staging concerts in unusual venues, this unique ensemble has since coaxed archaic energy, harmonic diversity, and delicate soundscapes from the iconic Swiss instrument. The results have included diverse productions such as the CDs zirp (2002), findling (2009), and gletsc (2015), and the programs hornroh inszeniert (2003), Hautmusik (2008), and hornOXER (2012), co-productions with Swiss Radio DRS, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, Lucerne Festival 2009, and Georg Friedrich Haas’ concerto grosso No. 1 with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Wien Modern, and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, SWR Symphony Orchestra, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
