In addition to their award-winning collaborative work, the founders of the New York collective Bang on a Can have strong individual careers. An eclectically inspired post-minimalist with strong vernacular roots balancing an equally strong academic background, David Lang has created numerous multimedia and theatrical works, and he won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for music for the little match girl passion, based on the Hans Christian Andersen tale; the Harmonia Mundi recording of the work won a Grammy in 2010. Although he studied composition at Yale with Martin Bresnick, Michael Gordon is also a veteran of the underground rock scene in New York City, and both worlds have shaped his work, much of which has involved theater or video aspects. Stylistically omnivorous, Julia Wolfe won an Obie Award for her score for Ridge Theater’s Jennie Ritchie and recently won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for music for her oratorio Anthracite Fields.
