About this Artist

German baritone CHRISTIAN GERHAHER was awarded the Prix International Pro Musicis in Paris/ New York in 1998. He made his debut at Carnegie Hall the next year, and later stood in at short notice for Peter Schreier and gave a recital for which he received rave reviews. Soon after, the young baritone made his highly successful debut at the London Wigmore Hall in a joint recital with soprano Edith Mathis. In November, he made a much-acclaimed solo debut at Wigmore Hall. On invitation of the BBC, Gerhaher will perform Schubert’s Schwanengesang at the Wigmore Hall in October. Gerhaher began his collaboration with Helmuth Rilling with Bach’s St. John Passion followed by concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the Vienna Musikvereinssaal.

From 1998 to 2000, Christian Gerhaher was engaged at the Stadttheater Würzburg, where he performed the roles of Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Albert (Werther), and Guglielmo (Così fan tutte). This June, he is engaged to sing concert performances of Weber’s Freischütz with Capella Coloniensis (WDR) under conductor Bruno Weil, which will be recorded for Deutsche Harmonia Mundi.
