PAUL GEMIGNANI (Musical Director and Conductor) has been the music director for more than 38 Broadway and West End shows, including Follies, Pacific Overtures, Candide, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Evita, Dreamgirls, Merrily We Roll Along, Into the Woods, On the Twentieth Century, Sunday in the Park with George, Jerome Robbins' Broadway, Crazy for You, Passion, High Society, Kiss Me Kate, Assassins, The Frogs, and the Japan National Theatre company's production of Pacific Overtures.
Gemignani records with the American Theatre Orchestra. In addition to many cast albums, their recordings include Sondheim, a Musical Celebration at Carnegie Hall (CD and video); Standing Room Only; In the Real World and Golden Days with Jerry Hadley; The Men in my Life with Marilyn Horne, Jerry Hadley, Thomas Hampson, and Samuel Ramey; Leading Man, a solo album with Thomas Hampson; Man of La Mancha with Plácido Domingo; Stephen Sondheim's Anyone Can Whistle with Bernadette Peters, Madeline Kahn, and Angela Lansbury; Betty Buckley at Carnegie Hall; My Favorite Broadway; and My Favorite Broadway, the Love Songs.
Gemignani has appeared as guest conductor with the Boston Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Baltimore Symphony. He has guest conducted and recorded with the Royal Philharmonic and the London Symphony. He is also a regular guest conductor at the New York City Opera, the Chicago Lyric Opera, the Royal Opera, and the New York City Ballet. He recently completed a recording with the Welsh National Opera Orchestra with artists Renée Fleming and Bryn Terfel entitled Under the Stars. This recording was also filmed in concert for broadcast throughout the world.
His feature films include Reds, A Little Night Music, Kramer vs. Kramer, Eye Witness, and Sweeney Todd, and his work for television includes Sondheim: A Musical Celebration at Carnegie Hall, Follies, Live at the Philharmonic, and A Little Night Music for PBS/Live from Lincoln Center; A Celebration of the American Musical with Jerry Hadley, Marilyn Horne, Frederica Von Stade, Samuel Ramey, Renée Fleming, Dwayne Croft, and others for PBS/Great Performances; Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park with George for Showtime; Passion for The American Playhouse; and Passion again for The American Song Book series, which received an Emmy.
Grammy nominations include Sweeney Todd, Crazy for You, Passion, Kiss Me Kate, and Assassins and Emmy nominations include My Favorite Broadway, the Love Songs.
Gemignani received a Tony Award in 2003 for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre for his "consistently outstanding musical direction and commitment to the theatre," the Los Angeles Drama Critics Award in 1994, and a special Drama Desk Award in 1989. Gemignani also received an honorary Doctor of Musical Arts from the Manhattan School of Music in 2003, and, most recently, in 2006, he received a Prime Time Emmy award for "best musical direction" for the PBS/Great Performances presentation of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific in concert from Carnegie Hall.
