About this Artist

The 42-year-old New York-born trumpeter, bandleader, teacher, producer, and music director grew up amidst the free-wheeling and wildly creative adventures of the jazz rock / avant garde / electric-electronic-flavored Gil Evans Orchestras of the 1970s. He began touring regularly with the band at age six (Europe, the U.K., Japan, and the Far East), working his way up from the road crew to section player (since age 18) and eventually to lead trumpet and soloist. Following his father’s death in 1988, he assumed leadership of the band and has continued touring and performing with the full orchestra and his own smaller groups. Evans trained with his father, Miles Davis, and veteran lead trumpeter Lew Soloff, and has taught at the Manhattan School of Music. Starting with the Grammy-winning collaboration of Miles Davis and Quincy Jones in 1991, and more recently with Maria Schneider, Jon Faddis, and Wynton Marsalis, Evans has collaborated in presenting the music of Gil Evans in a series of large-scale orchestral concerts.
