About this Artist
Jack Cousin became a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Double Bass section in 1974 at the age of 21, under Music Director Zubin Mehta. He was born in Boston and began playing the Double Bass at the age of 12, studying with Springfield Massachusetts Symphony Principal Bass, Anthony Bevivino. While in high school, Mr. Cousin was Principal Bass of the Greater Boston Youth Orchestra, which, in 1969 was one of 12 youth orchestras invited to attend the first International Festival of Youth Orchestras in St. Moritz, Switzerland, where Mr. Cousin played under the baton of Leopold Stokowski.
Mr. Cousin attended the New England Conservatory, where he studied with Boston Symphony bassist Leslie Martin and Principal Bass Henry Portnoi. He also participated in the Tanglewood and Temple Music Festivals where he studied with Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Bass Roger Scott.
Throughout his career, Mr. Cousin has performed internationally in numerous recitals, solo, and chamber music concerts, including the LA Phil's Chamber Music Society and Green Umbrella New Music Series. Widely respected as a bass teacher throughout Southern California, he has taught extensively at the middle school, high school, and university levels, and has participated in the LA Phil's educational programs.
Jack Cousin is also a renowned Fine Art Woodworker whose beautiful, hand carved exotic wood art is collected and sold throughout the United States. He is the business owner of Orchestrations and Encore Classical Designs. Mr. Cousin is currently working on making a Double Bass. He is married to Artist/Musician Andrea Comsky.
