About this Performance

Blue13 blends traditional and modern Indian dance with everything from hip-hop to ballet, challenging perceptions of South Asian dance. 100 Seconds to Midnight is a new contemporary dance project choreographed by Achinta S. McDaniel that draws inspiration from the infamous Doomsday Clock that measures how close the planet is to global catastrophe, which was created by J. Robert Oppenheimer, Albert Einstein, and other concerned scientists. McDaniel turns the metaphor to examine the idea of “doom” as experienced by South Asian communities, who are often erased, but experience cyclical trauma and the expectation of impending loss. The triptych work is presented through three movements that reveal misogyny, examine generational effects of colonization, and interrogate women’s duty, tradition, and assimilation.
