Cesaria Evora, the "barefoot diva" of Cape Verde, launches the Los Angeles Philharmonic's new World Music series at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Tuesday, November 18, at 8 p.m. Evora's bittersweet songs comprise the program, which marks the first time Evora's traditional morna musical style will be joined by an entire string orchestra (members of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra), conducted by Charles Floyd.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic's World Music series spotlights international artists from around the globe in four evenings of music. The series at Walt Disney Concert Hall continues with renowned bluegrass singer Alison Krauss and Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas on December 2; Mariza with the Los Angeles Philharmonic on April 2; and Zakir Hussain with Masters of Percussion on April 24.
Born in 1941, CESARIA EVORA is celebrated as the Queen of Morna (a Cape Verdean version of the blues). Blending West African, Portuguese, and Brazilian melodies with her smooth and captivating voice, this vocalist has drawn comparisons to Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf. Café Atlantico (RCA Victor) was released in 1999 as a dedication to her tribute of Mindelo. In addition, Evora's latest album, Voz D'Amour, was released in September 2003.
Conductor, pianist, and composer CHARLES FLOYD has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants including those from the Aspen School of Music, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, and the National Chopin Competition. As a conductor he has been heard in pops concerts with more than 500 orchestras since 1991, and his eleven-year partnership with Natalie Cole included such projects as the multiple Grammy Award-winning tribute to Nat King Cole.
