The artistically innovative Isaac Hayes, legendary funk master and horn player Maceo Parker, and the soul-jazz-hip-hop group Arrested Development, in a special reunion performance, will take the Hollywood Bowl audience on a journey through the soulful side of jazz on Wednesday, August 14 at 8 p.m.

Backbeat Live pre-concert performances take place one hour prior to the concert on the Patio, and are free to all ticket holders. The August 14 session features OO Soul, a band from Long Beach that blends jazz, soul, and Afro-Cuban rhythms.

From Sam & Dave to Shaft to South Park, few figures have exerted more influence over the music of the 1960s and 1970s and beyond, than Isaac Hayes. As a musician, writer, arranger, and producer, Hayes' solo career laid the groundwork for not only the disco movement, but also the evolution of rap music.

Saxophone legend Maceo Parker, who defines his music as "98% funk, 2% jazz," is best known for continually exploring adventurous new territory in his music, venturing from soul and funk to jazz and blues. After years of playing with James Brown and George Clinton, Parker continues to propel the evolution of funk music into the 21st century.

Pioneers in hip-hop with their unique, catchy, and spiritual sounds, Arrested Development, featuring Speech, came on the scene in the early '90s when the airwaves were saturated with gansta rap. Emerging with a new alternative rap style filled with thoughtful lyrics, Arrested Development catapulted into the musical consciousness. In 1996, Arrested Development officially called it quits as its members launched into solo careers. The concert on August 14 will mark a special reunion appearance for the band, as well as their Hollywood Bowl debut.

Since the 1960s, ISAAC HAYES has defined soul music. Widely known for his 1971 Academy Award- winning Shaft soundtrack, and his popular South Park character, "Chef," Hayes began his career as a Stax Records songwriter for Sam & Dave. Hayes released his first album in '67, and followed with the civil rights milestone, Hot Buttered Soul, which became one of the most influential recordings in African-American music. Since then, he has consistently appeared on the jazz, pop, R&B and easy listening charts for his 24 solo albums. Also known for his lavish stage shows, Isaac Hayes last performed at the Hollywood Bowl in 2001.

Longtime bandleader for James Brown and one-time sideman for P-Funk, MACEO PARKER is a sax man with soul and funk in his blood. The electrifying performer tours extensively and is known for getting audiences to their feet with the rhythmic and soulful command of his horn. After 38 years of playing, Maceo's skill, energy, and charisma continue to excite generations of fans. His last appearance at the Hollywood Bowl was in 1999.

Reuniting for this special performance at the Hollywood Bowl, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT emerged from the progressive soul-jazz-hip-hop era of the early '90s, alongside PM Dawn and De La Soul. Following their '92 success with two Grammies and Rolling Stone's Band of the Year Award, the leader of the band, Speech, recorded two solo albums, and the band enjoyed continued success in Japan. Positive, Afro-centric, and politically conscious, Arrested Development puts on a spiritual and upbeat stage show with dancers. This is their debut appearance at the Bowl.
