About this Performance

The Wind Rises, 2013
In Japanese with English subtitles

Miyazaki’s gorgeous The Wind Rises follows Jiro, a boy who dreams of soaring in the sky despite being disqualified from becoming a pilot, so he becomes a highly accomplished airplane designer. As rumors of war escalate, Jiro reunites with Nahoko, a young woman he met during the Great Kanto Earthquake years earlier. The two fall deeply in love, just as Nahoko falls ill with tuberculosis. Inspired by visions of Italian aeronaut Caproni, Jiro must confront mounting tragedies with dignity in this epic tale of love and perseverance. The Natural World of Studio Ghibli is a film screening series that invites audiences to enjoy classic and recent films by the legendary animation studios that explore our relationship with nature and the spiritual aspect of the natural world. Set against the natural wooded hillside backdrop of The Ford, the films feature Miyazaki’s fantastical worlds, memorable characters, and iconic scores by Joe Hisaishi. Experience unforgettable Studio Ghibli films shown in Japanese with English subtitles.
