Howl’s Moving Castle, 2004 In Japanese with English subtitles Called “an animated tour-de-force” by The New York Times and featuring some of Joe Hisaishi’s most memorable film music, Howl’s Moving Castle won the 2005 Academy Award and enchanted fans. A young hat merchant Sophie finds her life thrown into turmoil when she is literally swept off her feet by a handsome but mysterious wizard named Howl. The vain and vengeful Witch of the Waste, jealous of their friendship, puts a curse on Sophie and turns her into a 90-year-old woman. On a quest to break the spell, Sophie climbs aboard Howl's magnificent moving castle and into a new life of wonder and adventure that reveals a dangerous war of sorcery that threatens the world. The Natural World of Studio Ghibli is a film screening series that invites audiences to enjoy classic and recent films by the legendary animation studios that explore our relationship with nature and the spiritual aspect of the natural world. Set against the natural wooded hillside backdrop of The Ford, the films feature Miyazaki’s fantastical worlds, memorable characters, and iconic scores by Joe Hisaishi.
