    WHAT:

Russian-born Vasily Petrenko, the youngest Principal Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, comes to the Hollywood Bowl in two programs of classical concerts, Tuesday, July 26, and Thursday, July 28, at 8 p.m. He is joined in the Tuesday program by Russian pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk, who made his Bowl debut last summer; this time performing Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto. The program includes Antonín Dvořák’s Carnival Overture and also includes Jean Sibelius’ Second Symphony. Thursday’s program features LA Phil Principal Concertmaster Martin Chalifour perfoming Sibelius’ Violin Concerto. Also on the Thursday program are Dvořák’s masterpiece, Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” and Mikhail Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla.

Vasily Petrenko was born in 1976 and began his music education at the St. Petersburg Capella Boys Music School – the oldest music school in Russian. He was appointed Principal Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in September of 2006, and six months into his first season his contract was extended to 2012. In 2009, the contact was again extended to 2015, and he also assumed the title of Chief Conductor. In February 2011, it was announced that Petrenko will take up the position of Chief Conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra beginning in the 2013/14 season.

Alexander Gavrylyuk began his piano studies at the age of 7 and gave his first concerto performance when he was 9 years old. Following his 2000 win of First Prize in the prestigious Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in Japan, Gavrylyuk was proclaimed “the best 16 year old pianist of the late twentieth century” by critics there. Among others, he has performed with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Russian National Orchestra, Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Scottish Orchestra, Svetlanov Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, Israeli Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Philharmonic, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Lucerne Symphony, and Brussels Philharmonic.
