Alejandro G. Iñárritu

Born and raised in Mexico City, Academy Award®-winning director, writer, and producer Alejandro G. Iñárritu is one of contemporary cinema’s most celebrated voices. Renowned for his emotionally resonant storytelling and bold visual style, Iñárritu has consistently pushed the boundaries of filmmaking to explore the complexities of the human condition. 

He began his career as a radio host and director at Mexico’s WFM before transitioning to filmmaking with his production company, Z Films. His feature debut, Amores Perros, earned an Academy Award® nomination and launched him onto the international stage. This was followed by 21 Grams and Babel, completing his acclaimed “Death Trilogy.” Babel garnered seven Academy Award® nominations, and Iñárritu won Best Director at Cannes in 2006. 

His 2010 drama Biutiful received global recognition, including a Best Actor Oscar® nomination for Javier Bardem. In 2015, Iñárritu won the Academy Award® for Best Director for Birdman, which also won Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. He repeated this success the following year with The Revenant, earning his second consecutive Oscar® for Best Director and guiding Leonardo DiCaprio to his first Oscar® win. 

In 2017, his immersive VR project CARNE y ARENA premiered at Cannes, becoming the first VR experience to be an official selection. It later received a Special Achievement Academy Award®. 

His most recent film, BARDO, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival and made the 95th Academy Awards® shortlist for Best International Feature. 

Iñárritu remains a visionary force in global cinema, known for his innovative artistry and deep emotional insight, and continues to shape the landscape of storytelling on screen.
