Karl Huml

Bass Karl Huml was born and raised in Melbourne Australia, where in 1995 he was the winner of the prestigious Sun Aria Award. Huml was also the winner of the German Opera Award and the Met Opera award which enabled him to compete in the semifinal auditions on the Metropolitan Opera stage in New York City. Huml studied singing in New York with Ruth Falcon.

Huml has been a member of the Ensembles of Opera Australia, Oper Köln, Bremer Theater, and Volksoper Vienna.

Huml has significant experience singing contemporary repertoire. Recent projects include Astromadors (Le Grand Macabre by Ligeti, Palermo), Roy Cohn (Angels in America by Peter Eötvös in Vienna), Pflege Jonas (Koma by Hass, Salzburger Festspiele), principle soloist (The Garden by Richard Ayres, ASKO Schönberg Amsterdam), and world premieres of Die Dunkle Seite des Mondes by Unsuk Chin, Hamburgische Staatsoper, as Doktor Raubenstock, and Die Judith von Shimoda by Panisello at Bregenzer Festspiele, as Fürst Isa. Huml also has a long association with Neue Oper Wien in Vienna.

Some of his important roles include Filippo II (Don Carlo), Osmin (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Don Quichotte (Massenet’s Don Quichotte), Daland (Der Fliegende Holländer), Sarastro (The Magic Flute), Padre Guardiano (La Forza del Destino), Ramphis (Aida) Ferrando (Il Trovatore), Basilio (Barbiere di Sevilla) Timur (Turandot), Colline (La Bohème).

Huml has appeared in a number of International houses including Salzburger Festspiele, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Opera Australia, Hamburgische Staatsoper, Oper Köln, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, Wiener Festwochen, Volksoper Vienna, Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Teatro Bellini in Catania.

The artist has collaborated with many celebrated stage directors including Barrie Kosky, Elijah Moshinsky, Stefan Herheim, Dmitri Tcherniakov, Günther Krämer, Pier Luigi Pizzi, Marco Gandini, and Alessandro Talevi.

Huml has also worked with conductors such as Kent Nagano, Daniele Gatti, Simone Young, Gabriele Ferro, Omer Meir Wellber, Richard Hickox, Juraj Valčuha, Stefan Soltesz, Gianluigi Gelmetti, and many others.
