Described as a “gifted young guitarist” by The New York Times and “a guitarist to keep an eye on” by The Washington Post, two-time Grammy-nominated artist Mak Grgić [GER-gich] is a rising star in the world of classical and contemporary music. His expansive repertoire, spanning the ethnic music of the Balkans to avant-garde and microtonal works, showcases his versatility as both a soloist and a collaborator.
Grgić has premiered and commissioned numerous pieces, working with renowned composers such as Michael Gordon, Michael Abels, Julia Adolphe, and Nina Šenk. Upcoming projects include new works by Vito Žuraj, Austin Wintory, and Christopher Tin.
With over 85 performances annually, Grgić collaborates with prestigious ensembles and artists, including the JACK Quartet, Curtis Stewart, Martin Chalifour, Chee-Yun, and Augustin Hadelich. He is also a founding member of the FretX Duo and the flamenco-inspired Duo Deloro. His recordings, such as the Grammy-nominated Mak|Bach, highlight his innovative approach to the guitar.
Highlights of the 2024/25 season include appearances with the Pacific Symphony, Charleston Symphony, Boise Philharmonic, and Sedona Symphony and the East Coast premiere of Borders, by Michael Abels, with the American Composers Orchestra in Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall.
Grgić is also an educator and entrepreneur, involved in several music festivals and leading initiatives like the Virtual Guitar Orchestra, and is developing an educational game app called Notey, to teach guitar to young people. He holds a professorship at the University of South Carolina.
