Ivan Lins, winner of multiple Latin Grammys whose songs have received numerous Grammy Awards, was born in Rio de Janeiro. He is a complete musician and songwriter, known worldwide for his numerous recordings. Not coincidentally, he is one of the most recorded Brazilian artists.
Lins’ songs have been covered by major artists such as Sarah Vaughan, Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae, George Benson, Toots Thielemans, Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin, Al Jarreau, Dionne Warwick, Take 6, Sting, Diana Krall, Chaka Khan, Barbra Streisand, Dianne Reeves, Michel Legrand, Jorge Drexler, Till Brönner, Alejandro Sanz, Chucho Váldes, and Jane Monheit.
In 1981, Lins’ song “Dinorah, Dinorah,” arranged by Jerry Hey and Quincy Jones and performed by George Benson, won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement. His song “Velas” won the same award the following year. In 1990, “Setembro (Brazilian Wedding Song)” was nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Performance from the great album Back on the Block by Quincy Jones. In 2001, Sting won the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance with “She Walks This Earth (Soberana Rosa).”
In 2004, Lins released the CD and DVD Cantando Histórias, which earned him Latin Grammys for Best Brazilian Popular Music Album and Album of the Year.
In 2009, he won a Latin Grammy for his album Regência: Vince Mendoza, featuring arrangements of Mendoza’s music.
In 2015, the album América, Brasil earned him the Latin Grammy for Best Brazilian Popular Music Album.
Lins’ Latin Grammy–nominated 2023 album My Heart Speaks was recorded in Los Angeles and Tbilisi, Georgia. It was released by the North American label Resonance Records with the participation of Dianne Reeves, Jane Monheit, Tawanda, and the Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra.
