Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in New York City, Emilio Sosa is one of Broadway’s most distinctive voices in costume design. A five time Tony Award nominee, Sosa began his career at Grace Costumes, where he rose from shopper to Creative Director, establishing the foundation for a remarkable trajectory across stage, music, and fashion. Emilio’s early work toured globally with legends like Celine Dion, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. In the music world, he styled iconic music videos for Salt-N-Pepa, MC Lyte, and Kid ’n Play, and designed for legends such as Diana Ross, Mariah Carey, and Gloria Estefan. His innovative style caught the attention of Spike Lee, for whom he worked as a lead stylist on major advertising campaigns.Broadway soon beckoned, and under the mentorship of George C. Wolfe, Emilio made his debut with Topdog/Underdog. His Broadway credits include Sweeney Todd(Tony nomination), A Beautiful Noise, Ain’t No Mo’(Tony nomination), 1776, Good Night, Oscar(Tony nomination), Purlie Victorious(Tony nomination), Trouble in Mind(Tony nomination), On Your Feet!, Motown: The Musical, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess(Tony nomination), and Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill. Emilio also made history as the first designer of color to create for both the Radio City Spring Spectacular and the legendary Christmas Spectacular starring the Rockettes.His work has earned him a Drama Desk Award, Lucille Lortel Award, NAACP Theatre Awards, and the LA Ovation Award.
